How is technology being used in the classroom?

Currently, in our Pre-K classroom, our students are using technology constantly. We have a set of six ipads that are used during small group and center time. The SmartBoard that is located in the front of the classroom at the carpet square is used during morning meeting, music and movement, large group, and even read alouds. We also have four computers at the back of the room that we use during small group and center time.

Personally, I think that the amount of time our four-year-olds sit in front of the SmartBoard (as it is with tv's) is too long to be healthy for their eyes or their brains. There is no research, that I know of, explaining how SmartBoards affect children's health, though research suggests that at this age children should watch no more than two hours of tv daily. Yet, we sit them in front of the SmartBoard with videos and stories and songs for hours on end. What are the repercussions?

I fully expect to have technology available in my classroom, and fully intend to use it. I think that technology gives us amazing opportunities to explore things that we could not possibly explore within of our classroom. At the same time, I think that there is an exceptional opportunity that children have to discover their world using their hands. Being able to physically manipulate materials has been and always will be the most effective way for learning to transpire.

Because of this, I believe that technology will have a time and a place in my classroom, but will be used in support of learning, not in place of.

How do you feel about technology in the classroom?

Love,

Ms. Verner
